Guy lived in a one-bedroom apartment above the hundred-year-old hardware store along the main street. His stoop was a step and a weather-worn door. It was discreet. Out back, he had a fire escape, noisy, rusty, metal. It was ideal for getaways when fans decided to disrespect his space.
From the front door, they had to climb a narrow staircase. There was nothing fancy about it, but it was well kept. At the top of those stairs was his second door to unlock. He didnât need bodyguards everywhere he went, but he took home security seriously, thus the deadbolts.
Once inside, he could breathe easier. His home was basic but masculine. Cool, dark shades on the walls calmed him. He didnât have a lot of square footage, but he was out of the house most of the time. This was his place of rest, so every piece of furniture served a purpose and suited his comforts. Having Ellie in his sanctuary was surreal.
The ride home had been haywire, and Guy wasnât altogether sure where he and Ellie stood. There was her straightforward questioning about his sexual health, which was classic Ellie. Then hearing she and her fiancé had not been intimate in a while had made him a confused mix of angry and pitying at the same time. The call from Winter was reassuringâGuy liked her more for it. Ellie needed strong people with good values in her life. Then there was the kiss.
It hadnât come out of the blue, per se, but damn, was it sweet. It felt like a dream, but his manhood had let him know it was real. With her leaning into him, smelling like a damn meadow, it was hard to keep his hands to himself. Besides, Grayson wouldâve thrown them out on their asses. Rightly so, they werenât dumb kids anymore. Thatâs what Ellie did to him, made him feel young again, and a little out of control.
Guy turned on the light as he closed the door behind Ellie and locked up for the night. She sauntered in, not asking permission. She appraised the art on the walls where landscapes brought the outside in for him. The small library on the back wall pulled her farther into his space. He felt pride when she ran a finger along a few of the spines with quiet approval. As tiny as she was, they could manage to live here together. They didnât need much space between them. He could picture her curled up on the sofa with tea and a book.
But what the hell was he thinking? She hadnât come here to read. He groaned. It was time.
âListen, Ellie â¦â
She turned to face him, looking vulnerable and beautiful.
âYou donât have to do anything here tonight. Take the bed, and Iâll bring you some water.â
âYou listen, Manning,â Ellie said, wagging a finger at him. âI did not come all this way to be babied by you. If you donât want me, I can always call Winter and try my luck elsewhere.
